Sacred City of Anuradhapura Yoga Retreat
[Sri Lanka]
An in-depth exploration of the 'Cradle of Buddhist Civilisation" in Sri Lanka
Next tour TBA
This June Katie’s Wild Yoga and Indies Adventures will be hosting a Yoga, Buddhist, and Cultural immersion (retreat) in Anuradhapura. We have chosen Anuradhapura because it is a treasure trove of mystical experiences. It's a site of historical and spiritual significance to Buddhist pilgrims and Sri Lanka. And Anuradhapura is the hometown of Indika, our expert guide and Buddhism teacher; who grew up with this mysterious city as his playground. This retreat is perfect for anyone curious about Yoga, Buddhism and the culture and history of Sri Lanka.
Anuradhapura
Anuradhapura is the ancient capital of Sri Lanka and is considered sacred in the Buddhist world. It is known as the 'cradle of Sinhalese Buddhist civilisation'. Established around a cutting from the 'tree of enlightenment' - the Buddha's Bodhi Tree, it's a labyrinth of sprawling ruins of enormous dagobas (brick stupas), ancient pools, crumbling temples, and historic monasteries. Hidden under dense jungle for many years this ancient city is now accessible and able to be explored, (lucky us).
Accomodation & Activities
Our accommodation will be in a locally owned and built guesthouse. The guesthouse has been built slowly, one room at a time, and is now a friendly, comfortable, refreshing little oasis out of town, with a pool and lake view. We will practice yoga and meditation every day on the neat lawns of our accommodation, in a forest monastery, on the grounds of an ancient stupa and other exciting places we can find. We will cycle on the back roads through lotus filled lakes and villages. We will enjoy local music and a cooking lesson, fill up with mouth-watering Sri Lankan curry, chopped roti and hoppers. Then enjoy the moody vibes of the temples at night and rock caves that still bear the remnants of the daily lives of monks thousands of years ago. You will also have plenty of time to relax by the pool or wander the villages.
Your Guides
Your guide Indika has been hosting tours for a leading Australian company, and for himself for almost ten years. He recently won the bronze award in the Wanderlust World Guide Award and scored a trip to London to receive his prize. Indika is proud that Anuradhapura is his home town; he is excited to show you around! Katie has been teaching, studying, and practising yoga for ten years and taking folks on regular yoga escapes for the last four years. Her love for Sri Lanka and Yoga will shine through.
